PLEASE NOTE: We are not a working farm; we are a Sanctuary that works with many different farm animal rescues. Volunteer expectation: We’re ideally seeking volunteers who can stay 5 weeks or longer, with priority given to 2–3-month live-in stays for the studio room. Longer stays help build deeper connections with the animals and integrate into sanctuary life we highly recommend this option if you are taking a gap year or have more time to spare, as the experience is invaluable. Sarja Microsanctuary is a volunteer-based registered charity for rescued animals, nestled in the mountains of Cómpeta, southern Spain. It’s run day-to-day by Raquel, and 1-2 Workaways who live on-site with over 50 rescued animals, including donkeys, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, cats, dogs, and peacocks. The sanctuary was co-founded with Tracey, who now supports remotely from the UK with a few visits annually. Our mission is to offer a peaceful, plant-based haven for animals in need. Volunteers help for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, with 2 full days off. Duties include but are not limited to: feeding and watering, cleaning, building shelters, carrying hay and sacks of grain. You’ll learn ethical animal care and sanctuary routines. Mornings start early with feeding rounds, followed by hands-on tasks like mucking out, DIY projects, and plenty of time for animal interaction. Must be comfortable working alone after 1 week of training. Also fit for the mountainous and rocky landscape. We host 2–4 volunteers at a time in two separate self-catering accommodations, offering privacy and comfort with beautiful mountain views in both. While breakfast is enjoyed independently in your own space, we come together for shared plant-based lunches and dinners. While we are working on a communal area and Volunteer hub, the main house is open at given times for cooking meals and showers. Though we ask volunteers to respect designated access times and shared area guidelines. The sanctuary offers a peaceful rhythm that suits nature lovers. While we value connection, we also cherish quiet time to recharge—especially given the physical and emotional demands of sanctuary life. The surrounding area is rich with hiking trails, river walks, and scenic spots to explore, and the town of Cómpeta is just a short drive or walk away.
